Holiday Hunger-stoppers

My sweet and sassy mini is SO excited about the holidays!  We have been busy crafting all sorts of fun projects and writing letters to Santa...and now she wants to know when we are making the cookies.  The hubs and I have fiends that make dozens upon dozens of cookies every year.  They could feed a village on cookies.  We do a few dozen to share with family and Santa and usually call it a day.

We have an annual holiday get together with some fiends of ours too each year at our house and in the past my hubby has made some of the above mentioned cookies for them as "host gifts."  Yes, they are THAT good.  I do tend to boast how awesome my fam is but you don't understand...there aren't words to describe how amazing the hubs cookies are.  They are the only ting that is ever actually requested by the extended family for any and all gatherings...the girls look forward to special events because they know they will be made...they are epic cookies in our household.  He makes both chocolate chip and sugar and they are equally as delish!  I am curious as to whether he is going to attempt them this year with gluten free flour, or just make them "regular" style.

Now, with the holidays coming up it brings concern as to how to get through the holidays without misbehaving too much.  The hubs and I have been doing really well with not eating the gluten, we also have a friend who is vegan, and most recently we have a family that has decided to cut back on sugar.  Now first and foremost, I am so proud of my family and friends for taking steps towards healthier lives, but with the holidays how is this possible?!?!?!  Well for our annual gathering, to add some fun to the event, I issued a healthy food challenge.  I made no restrictions but have challenged everyone to make the tastiest and healthiest food to bring to our potluck!  Lets not end up pot-bellied from our pot luck!!

So I have been looking for recipes, and am asking you for any suggestions you may have.  IN a perfect world, I would find the yummiest sugar free, non dairy, gluten free item to serve, and I have not lost hope in that endeavor.

What do you recommend?!?!?!

also, a few resources I have found so far in my searching

Always Remember

I will always remember and never forget that fateful day, as we all will.  Today I stop and say a prayers of thanks.  To all of the men and women who have fought tirelessly throughout history for our country, for our freedom.  I say a prayer for the people who perished that fateful day.  I say a prayer for their family and friends.  I say a prayer the medics, police, firefighters, first responders, everyone who risked their own lives to save as many as possible.  I say a prayer for a city still healing.  I say a prayer for my children, that they may never live through such a terrifying attack in their own lifetimes.  I say a prayer for the world.

Days like today make me stop and really think.  The number on the scale, the amount of reps or calories.  It's all so small in the grand scheme of things.  Always remember!

Back to the Grindstone

Well my dears I am back from vacation.  Sad to be back, even more sad that I left all my lovelies at home asleep bright and early while I had to drag myself up and off to work.  Ahhh reality, back to the everyday grind.  I will share all about my trip soon, sorry there were no updates.  The wifi at our first hotel was pretty much non-existent it was so slow....then we were off to the beach so (no offense) but I didn't even think of the wifi, then it was an amusement park day with just no time for wifi...so I do apologize that you will have to wait just a bit longer to hear of all our adventures, but I do promise they are coming.

A few things that I do want to share now though:

1) I love my family and am SO glad we were able to sneak away for a few days and spend lots of quality time together

2) I am ready to make some changes...bring on the goal setting

3) I need your help...keep me accountable!

What is all this you ask?  Well, without getting into it too much I am ready to make some changes.  I have been lazy and that needs to stop.  I need to get back on track with my workouts and my eating habits.  While on vacation my 3 year old asked (more then once I must proudly say) for salad as her meal.  Thinking about it now I am proud and happy that she knows how to make good, healthy choices when it comes to what she eats...I am also sad and ashamed that I enjoyed WAY too many "bad" foods while she chomped on her leafy greens; ah and that student becomes the teacher :)

You are all over the place today Shannon, what gives??!!  I know, my head is swirling with everything I want to write about but OMG it's Wednesday already and I want to make sure I get my Blog of the Week in, especially since this week's blog is my "blogspiration."  This week's Blog of the Week is...

As a kid in 5th grade I had someone that was one of my BFF's.  When she told me her family was moving to Tennessee I was so upset.  I remember sleeping over her house and her mom making us oven fried chicken (yummo) and just always smiling with her!  Again as with last week's blog, the beauty of social media brought us back together.  Reconnecting with Kelly has been awesome, what is even better is she has this amazing blog that has helped inspire me with mine.  Kelly's journey has been a fierce one (just like her).  She still makes me laugh, makes me feel inspired and challenges me to be better.  She may never know how truly grateful I am that we reconnected and how much she has helped me.  Make sure you check out her blog.  It's just fabulous!

Blog of the Week

Isn't it funny that the people you knew and were close to in your childhood tend to be the ones you come back to?  You may not reconnect on the same level, but you still reach out to them and have such high hopes for them and their families.  This weeks Blog of the Week is written by that kind of friend.

When I was in 10th-11th grade I had a close knit group of friends that were a year ahead of me in school which meant I always had that fear in my hear of "What will I do when they graduate and leave me?"  One of those friends was Kate.  Kate was and is amazing!  A heart so open and sweet that you couldn't help but just love her.  It was the same with her family...I remember sleeping over on yoga mats in their living room and just smiling.

Kate also opened my eyes to fitness and health on a different level.  I was active with dance, soccer and track...but outside of regular practice times and classes I didn't think much about my own good health.  For me that changed on March 25, 1993 when my Dad had a heart attack on the way to a dinner at our church.  He was (at the time) 46.  He had a triple bypass and is now doing well, but it made me stop and think.

In the fall of that year I began to really know Kate.  She taught aerobics at the Y and encouraged me to take a class.  I LOVED her step aerobics class.  To this day I credit her for my mad step skills when I bust out the Wii fit and school my family in step. :)    We had so many great times together and when she graduated I was so sad.  As with people of that age...we drifted apart.

Fast forward almost 20 years later (holy cow really...are we THAT old) and welcome to Facebook.  Thanks to social media I have been able to catch up with Kate and see pics of her beautiful family.  And this year, born out of similar circumstances, Kate has started her own blog as well The Well Balanced Family, and has her own facebook page for her blog as well.  Kate is still an inspiration to me, and is on her won crazy journey to find a better, healthier life style for her and her family.  I encourage you wholeheartedly to check out her blog!!

Forever friends

the beautiful Suzanne as one of my fab bridesmaids
There are a handful of people I can think of, literally I can count them on one hand, that I know no matter how much time or distance is between us they will always be there for me.  No judgment, no questions, just love and support.  I had no idea when I took a summer theatre gig 14 years ago, that I would meet someone who would change my life so much, my dear friend Suzanne.

When I first met Suzanne, we were both young, arrogant, chain smoking drinkers who were loud and loved to party!  We could stay up and out for hours and still roll out of bed the next day ready to function (some of us HOURS before the other <wink>), we laughed, we cried...it was like I found a part of my being that had been missing.  She is part of my heart and I love her dearly.  We have gone through relationships, children, self discovery, great jobs, unemployment...it has truly been a roller coaster of a friendship but NEVER have I questioned it.  Truth be told, Suzanne is the one friend I have never had a major fight with, never!  We may have been on opposite sides of the fence on issues...but never a knock down drag out fight.

I have been looking back over the past many years and realized how far we have come together and separately.  I am so proud of the woman she has become.  I am overjoyed that she is regaining confidence, and just love her dearly.  Suzanne has always been so strong.  I have had many times were I wished I could be more like her.  To be unafraid of change, to be adventurous, to have the unbelievably flawless skin and natural beauty that she has, to be well, just more Suzannelike :)

Over the past year she has been working hard.  She has been challenging herself, both her mind and body and has had amazing results....just 2 short weeks ago she crossed the 100 pound threshold.  She has lost over 100 pounds and I am SO proud of her.  I asked her to share some of her journey with you, my readers...I hope she inspires you a fraction of how much she has inspired me.

I do not remember a time in my life where I wasn’t overweight.  As a child you begin pretty early on identifying what it is about you that is different from the other kids, even though you’re mostly powerless to change.  At that age accepting who you are when you aren’t like the other kids is nearly impossible—fitting in is all that matters.  I remember all-too painfully one of the nasty girls in my 4th or 5th grade class (who some 20-years later “friend” requested me on Facebook) telling me that we didn’t win a basketball game because I was too big for any of the shorts the school provided.  Being different was never easy.

But somewhere around 6th or 7th grade I experienced a miracle of sorts.  I began to see past my weight and find my confidence.  I discovered a love of music, theatre, and performing that transformed the way I saw myself, which, in turn, made being overweight only a small part of who I was, and a part I could accept more easily.

My new-found confidence developed and stayed with me for many years, all the way through my 20s.  I had a career that fulfilled me (even if I’d never be rich), travelled all over, made many friends, and was, for the most part, pretty secure with who I was.  I was still overweight, but when I walked into a room my confidence was what people saw, not my size.  And if it wasn’t I just didn’t care.  I thought I was beautiful.

The reversal of my confidence and self esteem came at the end of my 20s, when a succession of painful relationships ended, I lost my job, and I began caring for my ailing grandmother.  My career, which had always been a major part of my identity, was put on the back burner for nearly two years, and I slowly began to lose what it had taken me over 15 years to build.  I cried all the time, lost more friends than I can count, and began to see myself as utterly deplorable.  After a year of caring for my grandmother I had gained 100lbs.  I could no longer walk long distances without horrible pain in my feet, I went out of my way to avoid stairs, and I stopped wanting to go anywhere because I was so embarrassed.  Food became both the reason for my misery and the only thing that made me feel better.  It was an absolute nightmare.

In October of 2011 I finally broke through the pain and got off my ass.  I was hired to work the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, something I had always wanted to do, and I was determined to use that opportunity to turn my life around.  The week before I left for Utah I went to my first Weight Watchers meeting.  I am not exaggerating when I say it was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done.  Committing, truly committing, to do something that hard physically, mentally, and emotionally, is incredibly scary, but I knew I would die if I didn’t change.

People will always tell you how hard losing weight is, and it is, but not for the reasons you might think.  Adjusting to new eating habits is difficult, to be sure, but what I found (and still find) to be the most gut-wrenching part of this whole experience is that constantly, from morning to night, I focus on what I eat, what I look like, and what it all says about who I am.  Some of this is good.  I am a far healthier person that I ever thought I would be, and care very much about what I am putting into my body.  But I also care more about what other people think when they see me.  I beat myself up if I have a bad day.  I’ve lost over 100lbs and still struggle with regaining a fraction of the confidence I had when I ate whatever I wanted.  Going from being someone who thought she was beautiful regardless of size to someone who thinks about size nonstop is exhausting.  I wonder if I’ve betrayed who I was all the time, even though I know that what I am doing is incredibly important.  I know I’m on the right track, but figuring it all out is incredibly difficult, which is one of the reasons I am happy I’ve decided to do this the hard way instead of through surgery.  I need this time to work it all out on the inside, too.

Losing weight isn’t just about eating less and working out more.  It’s about finding your inner strength, confidence, and love.  I miss deeply the relationship I had with myself before, and continue daily to search for a middle ground.  I still have a long way to go, and sadly my genetics likely mean that this will be a lifelong struggle for me.  But I can’t deny that it feels wonderful to be 33 and in the best shape of my life.  Once I found what worked for me (spin) working out became a joy.  I love finding new recipes for healthy food, but I still allow myself pizza or french fries once a week.  My life isn’t perfect now, and I still have a lot of self-doubt, but I am on this journey to rediscover who I am, and to once again know that I am beautiful inside and out.  And I know I can do it.  I’ve come this far, right?

love you Suz and am so proud of you!

Monday Madness

My sweet 3 year old

Well, for starters this fine Monday morning...I can officially say I am the mom of a 3 year old.  She had the best weekend ever!  It was a busy one, but an amazing one!  We started off with a soccer game Friday night for my oldest and a thrown together party at the coach's house after with all the kids!  SO fun!  Saturday morning the birthday baby woke up singing "today is my party day" and helped me start on the decorations before dance class.  We had a Tinkerbell fairy extravaganza.

the cake...yummo!

some of the festive decor
Daddo and big sister did the table decor, made and hung some fabulous fairy posters, and had banners hung all around.  Birthday girl and I did balloons.  She has been talking about balloons since her sister's party a few weeks ago.  Did you know that there is a national helium shortage and you can't get helium right now?  We have our own tank and couldn't get it topped off due to the shortage.  We had just enough to make her happy.  Sad to think that this may be the last birthday with floating balloons.  I also made some balloon flowers (thank you Pinterest).   Had ANOTHER soccer game Saturday before the party too.  Crazy, busy day.

Sunday was the actual birthday and we celebrated by doing one of my most favorite fall activities...APPLE PICKING!  I love going to the orchard and picking fresh apples.  We even got a few raspberries this year as well.  What made the timing of this so perfect as well is that I have a friend who I have known for many years, and thanks to the world wide web, we have been able to re-connect over the past few years.  I have mentioned hr here many times before, it's my dear friend Kelly from No Thanks To Cake.  Kelly is having a wonderful family vacation right now before heading off to Fitbloggin 2012 and she asked me a few weeks ago to write a guest blog on her site.  I was THRILLED!  It is my first "guest blogger" experience and I certainly hope it won't be my last.  Anyways, I digress.  When I sat down to write my post for NTTC, I automatically went to my fav fall thing...the apples and birthdays!  I had a blast watching the kids climb and pick yesterday, and if you have an extra minute...check out my post, Seasons Change, To Cake today...and check out the whole site if you haven't yet.  It is Fabulous with a capital FAB!
my wonderful family at the orchard...by far the best "pick" of the day

So that brings us to Monday!  Woke up feeling great after a great weekend with the fam...and started it with a 7am Zumba class.  This class was awesome!  I have taken Zumba classes before and they have left me feeling good, but not always like I had gotten the most from the workout.  Maybe because the classes were so large?  not really sure, but today there was only 6 of us and the instructor was the best one I've had yet.  After and hour I was feeling the burn and dripping with sweat.  I loved it!  It's been a while since I felt that challenged.  I am so excited to see what the other classes I'm scheduled to take are like.  I may mix it up a little more and take this instructors other Zumba class later in the week instead of Tai Chi...but haven't decided yet.  I'll keep you posted though for sure.

So to recap, successful birthday weekend, apple picking, guest blogging, and great workout...what's missing this crazy Monday, well of course my Friend Making Monday update.  Here you go...and here's to an amazing week for all of us!  Can't wait to see what kind of updates I get on Friday for Feel Good Friday...I am already making my list.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

Blog Stuff

1. Have you ever met anyone through your blog that led to an in-person friendship/relationship? Haven’t met anyone through the blog, but started mine off of the inspiration of someone I already knew.

2. Most bloggers have a specific niche. What would you discuss if it didn’t seem inappropriate on your blog? Certain family dynamics (in-laws and ex’s).

3. If you could meet three bloggers, who would they be? Not sure…I read a few daily…In have already met Kelly from No Thanks To Cake (have known her for MANY years), but would love a reunion!  I think it would be great to meet you Kenlie!  I love reading your blog!  I also wouldn’t mind a face to face with Gina at SkinnyTaste!

4. If you had to choose between Facebook or Twitter which one would you choose? Facebook…hands down.  I haven’t really delved into Twitter yet, so it’s still a foreign concept to me.

5. Do you vlog (video blog?) Not yet J

6. How many blogs do you read on an average day? Most days probably 2-3, sometimes more, sometimes less.  Depends on what is happening during the day.

7. What is the coolest thing that you’ve seen online recently? Another soccer mom I am friends with has a blog Joan Satow where she showcases her artwork, and recently she has posted some BEAUTIFUL pieces of our town.  I just love it!

8. If you gave your blog a new name what would it be? I’m not sure…that will take some pondering.

9. Have you ever attended a blog conference like Fitbloggin? If not, would you? I haven’t, but I think it would be fun to get out and connect IRL with other bloggers, and meet some of my faves!

10. In the past I have asked why you blog. Now I want to know why you read blogs? What do you take from it? Advice, support, ideas.  It’s a safe space where you can interact with people with common goals and not worry about distance or time zones.

Have a great week everyone!!

Never Forget

Today is a day that I always stop and take stock.  It's a day that I will make sure my children always remember.  It's a day that was very real for my generation.  Before I moved into the world of academia, I worked in professional theatre.  I refer to it as my "former life."  It was something I loved doing, but was not conducive to having a family...at least not in the capacity that I worked, as a Stage Manager.  Imagine my excitement at 23 to be told by my boss "We are doing a new show, one that has only ever been showcased...and for financial reasons we are sending you to NYC to rehearse it for 5 weeks."  OMG!!  I was SO excited.  Hello Big Apple!

I arrived in NYC on Monday, made my way to my kick a$$ apartment the company was putting my assistant and me up in and started to settle in.  Tuesday we got up early, walked through Times Square to work and started setting up the rehearsal space.  AT the time, I was still a smoker and we were outside on a smoke break when a traffic cop told us terrorists had taken over the towers.  What?!?!  This can't be?  Then we heard it.  We staggered across the street and saw the playback on the jumbo-tron of the first plane...then we looked towards the south end of the island.  I will never forget.

I wanted to go home.  I wanted my (then boyfriend) husband to hold me.  I wanted my mom and dad.  I wanted it to be a bad dream.  We were immediately sent "home" and watched the news coverage all day.  What else could we do.  Strange city, no phone service for a few hours, we just sat and watched dumbfounded.  Later that evening, after talking to family and loved ones, we left the apartment to find dinner.  The feeling that was in NYC at that time, in that moment, is the feeling I wish would take hold of this country.  Never have I seen a city...a mass group of strangers pull together the way they did.  It wasn't natives and tourists and visitors...it was Americans.  It was people going out of their way to make others feel safe, feel okay, just feel.  I remember being numb until that point.

Over the next few weeks we attended vigils, saw the devastation, and tried to heal with a city that was left with a permanent scar.  I was left with a permanent scar.  I look back and even as I write this I can feel the tears stinging my eyes.  I can taste the smoke and ash in the air, I can feel the loss...but I have hope that we can move forward.  To draw strength from this horror.  To give respect and honor to all those that were lost, all those that stepped up as true heroes, and continue the fight today.  To never forget.

Friend Making Monday

Friend Makin’ Mondays:

What’s On Your Workout Playlist?

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers.  The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts.
So, when it comes to the ol' iPod, I am actually a big book on tape girl.  I have a nice little commute to and from work everyday so I load up the iPod and plug it into the car radio and listen to my books.  I have gotten through more books that way then I ever could by just sitting and turning pages (which I do still do when I can on principle).  I have tried to listen to books while working out, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  Since getting my fab new iPhone though, I have been experimenting with using it at the gym since I take it anyways.  Without wanting a HUGE time commitment from uploading songs I have started with my ten year old's itunes library, and here are my top workout songs:
  • Blow by Ke$ha
  • Call me by Nikka Costa
  • Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne
  • Fabulous from Disney Kids Rock (I know...it's a 10 years olds though)
I also like Maroon 5's Moves like Jagger, the Jersey Boys soundtrack makes for a perfect run cycle for a 3.5 mile run (with warm up and cool down) and Gym Class Heroes Stereo Heart (featuring Adam Levine).

So there you have, a weird mix, but it works for me and gets my butt moving!
