The Big Picture

Over the past few weeks, while working on and trying to make sure I keep up with our Fit Family Challenge, I have really taken pause and looked at things in a more "big picture" way.  It's funny to me how little things, like making sure I get SOME movement in each day, can really change your perspective and how you look at things.

When my youngest was born, I hated the fact that we weren't in a position where I could be a stay at home mom.  What if I missed something?  What if we weren't as close as she grew up as I had been dreaming we would be?   Why did my BFF get to stay home and not me?  These were questions that ran through my mind all.the.time.  But there was no changing how our life was, so it was something I learned to deal cope with, and it was hard.

What it did give me though was the ability to appreciate every moment we did/do spend together and the hope that things would eventually change.  I got a better job, the hours were better....I thought this was my time.  Mini me started pre-school and things were good.  Once she was in kindergarten though, I was back to feeling upset and angry.  My job changed some, which meant my hours changed and no the ream of mini being a car rider every day was gone.  We had to enroll her in extended care, and I hated everyday of it.  The first few weeks she cried everyday when she got there.  Now, she was generally only there for 30 minutes, but the tears broke my heart.

I had to find the silver lining.  My job was better than before, a little more money coming in, the schedule change forced me to take time for me everyday...and I used that time to exercise.  I started walking everyday for an hour.  I would grab my phone, listen to a book on tape and could generally crank out 3-3.5 miles in that hour.  When I had blood work done after a while, my numbers were all better, and I was feeling less stressed, but still guilty.

This daily moving though spurred me to do more at home which got everyone moving more.  The hubs and I would take turns exercising while the other played with the kiddos.  It was a nice routine, but I still longed for those SAHM perks.  Enter the opportunity I had been waiting for.  I was unhappy with work and all the changes that continued to happen, especially the workload increase ion everyone and the expectation that we would just take it and deal.  It was bad for morale and EVERYONE was unhappy.  That's a hard envirnoment to work in, my outlet other than my daily walk was to scan employment postings.  And that where I found my cha-ching!

The job I am in now is, well a blessing.  I honestly don't know how else to explain it.  For the first time in 15 years I am working with someone who appreciates having school aged children at home and who puts family first the same way I do.  For the first time in 15 years, I can call in and say..."Hey, we have a parent program at school today" without a knot in my stomach for fear of the repercussions.  For the first tie since mini was born, I feel like I have the perks of a SAHM...she is a car rider both ways to school, she can do activities after school at 4:30 because Mom can be there and get her there, I can make my older daughters 5:00 soccer games, I can go to room parties, book fairs, volunteer in the classroom...all because of this blessing that is my new job.

This also means that I have a LOT more time after school to be active with my family.  We can do more nature walks, bike rides, swimming..all because we aren't getting home in time for dinner to get started.  We get home WAY before that!  It means being able to help teach mini how to ride without training wheels on a weeknight!  It means dropping her off at 4:30 dance class while Big Sis is at soccer, and mom getting in a much needed run.

Looking at how our life is, right now, in this moment, has allowed me to see the big picture...and I tell you what, I wouldn't change it for anything!  I have the best of both worlds.  My own sense of worth in my job career, and my sense of feeling like a great mom and wife!

Settling In

It seems that life is finally starting to slow down a bit and allow itself to be enjoyed.  It has been so long since I sat down and wrote.  Lets see...since the post surgery update...my hubby is doing SO well.  Like ah-may-zingly well.  He is taking his doctors advice to heart about getting out and moving to get himself back on track.  He has been walking a few miles a day or hitting the gym.  nothing overly strenuous...just the elliptical for right now as he hasn't been given 100% clearance yet...that comes in a few short weeks, but he is doing great!  I got him a fitbit for Fathers Day to keep him motivated...hoping it fits ok.  He has had a really hard time finding something that fits comfortably on his wrist.

Mini me is rocking out things too.  She has been asked to audition for her dance studio's Competition Team.  She is over the moon excited about this.  She has a clinic today to get ready and tomorrow is the big day.  Mommy is taking the morning of from work to get her all ready and be there tomorrow. We went and got a new leo to wear, have all our hair stuff ready.  Daddy even found a super cool dance bag to buy if she makes the team.  We have been talking about how much more time this would mean at the studio if she makes it, and she is excited.  I think she found her passion in dance and that makes my heart soar!  We have also talked about the importance of making good choices with this new adventure.  She has always been good with food choices...this one will ask for fruit or veggies  before sweets and chips and stuff 99% of the time.  We have been trying to pick fun activities that will keep us moving too and keep us both in better shape.  She is LOVING her bike right now, so we have been doing long walks with the dog and her on her bike...I even attempted to get back out jogging some but she is too hard of a coach.  She kept shouting that I needed to move faster...I was slowing her down. hahahahha

My big girl had her first night of high school soccer training last night.  Mini me and I dropped her off and then went and did a 1 mile walk.  They worked those girls hard.  They have to pass a fit test in order to even be considered for the team.   They have awhile series of stuff they have to do...sprints, kicks, burpees, juggling, sit ups, laps, etc all in under 27 minutes to be considered.  She started at 35, which wasn't terrible for her first time out, and that was with stopping to see what had to be done at each station.  It was a shock to her system I think, but in a good way.  She got in the car after and asked if we could start running together.  So proud of how she has stepped up to this challenge.

My new job is awesome!  So family friendly and the schedule is unreal.  I heard someone down the hall the other day say he was "too blessed to be stressed."  I really feel like that is the best way to describe life right now!

Parenthood

Hi, my name is Shannon and I have an addiction to the TV show Parenthood on NBC.  I have recently found this  amazing piece on Netflix, and cannot seem to stop  watching it.  I am eagerly awaiting the season premier this year even more then my birthday.  Well, truth be told it's ON my birthday, so it's like NBC's little gift to me.  There.  I  said it.  I openly admit my addiction.

I have found myself emotionally attached  to  these characters, and drawing on their experiences and how things parallel life.  It's such a good show.  It's true to life.  It's made me stop  and really appreciate little things with my family that I may have otherwise not even noticed.  I have actually felt a wave of  calm    wash over me  after watching an episode.  It's like, see, even TV families have a lot of crap to deal with, its not all Norman Rockwell.

One of the things I  find after watching it though is how aware I am of time passing.  My oldest turned 13 yesterday.  She is officially a teenager.  I can't believe  it.  My youngest,  my baby,  my mini me...she started kindergarten last week.  Where has the time gone?  Where is it going? Why do my babies have to  keep getting older and more independent?   I know that is what is best for them,  I really do...but they are my babies.

There was a storyline that I just finished in the show (I won't tell you...no need  for a spoiler alert for  those who intend   to watch)...but it made me really start to think about the things that I want my girls to know  and remember and think and feel and believe.  So here it goes.

My sweet Bayba..

You are  now a teenager.  I can't believe it.  When did this happen?  You were just me sweet little girl yesterday  pressing her  face against the window at daycare crying, begging me not to  leave you there (which made me constantly  late for work-because I couldn't just leave you there).  You were the first person to make me realize just how full of love my heart could really be.  You were my sleep  hating baby at night that would gently lay on my chest and hold my finger as you napped during the day.  You were the first amazing child  in my life to utter  the word  Momma, and make me realize just how special that word really is.  You made me look at my relationship with Mimi (my mom)  in a whole new light.  You make me laugh, you make me cry, you fill me with fear and also hope.  You have grown into a beautiful young woman.  Quiet and reserved,  smart, witty,  funny with your Dad's crazy sense of humor.  You know what is important to you and you protect it fiercely.  You try to be SO independent, but still come and just  hug me or rest  your head on my shoulder so I know you still need  me,   and guess what...I need  you too.   You will always be my first baby.  The first one to fill my heart and make me realize how precious life is and can be,  I have so  many hopes and dreams for you.  You doubt yourself, we  all do,  but you are stronger  than you know and can do anything.  I know all parents tell their children that, but you my sweet girl really can and will.  I am so  proud of the person you are becoming, it's an honor to be your mom.

Oh my sweet, sweet mini me,

I don't even know where  to begin with you.  You are  my soul, my heart.  You and I connect in a way no one else  ever will or will ever truly understand.  You made  me realize that love is bigger and stronger  than anything in this  world.  You spoke  to me even when you were still rolling around and kicking in my belly.  You are me.  I  look into  your big beautiful eyes and see such love reflecting back at me.  You may look like  your  Dadoo, but you my dear, are  all Momma.  You are my perfect angel.  The dream that I wasn't sure would ever come true.  You have taught me so much about myself, and have made me better for it.  You are my sassy, smart, creative, outgoing,  vivacious girl that can't be stopped.  You are as determined  and stubborn as me, you are adamant (Daddy's favorite word to describe Mommy), you know what you want and go after it.  Don't ever lose that!  In a world that  is  so  scary and out of control, you are  my center.  You remind me of what it is all  really about.  Kindergarten.  WOW!   I am still in disbelief that  it is already that time.  You have handled it  all with grace and style, as  I knew  you would.  You are  just starting on this adventure as a "big girl" and I could not be more proud of you.  You will move mountains.  Follow your heart and your dreams always.  I can not wait to see what life has in store for you, whatever it is I just know you will take it all in and make things better, brighter.  You are  a shining star in a dark sky.

You are sisters.  You are always going to be sisters and connected to  each other.  Support one another, love one another,  celebrate each other, fight, laugh, love, scream, live for each  other.  You are so similar and yet so  different.  Thank  you for  allowing me to  be your mom.  I am honored and blessed by your greatness, and love you more then the moon, and the sun, and alllllllllllll  the stars  in the sky infinity amen.

The power of positive thinking

Oh wow what a week!  Thanks to all of you who should support over on my face book page, both my personal one and the Waits and Measurements one.  Your kind words and prayers are appreciated.  Ever have one of those weeks where everything kind of hits you all at once? That has been ours.  My hubby's grandmother passed away, then we found out our neighbor was diagnosed with end stage cancer, and  then we find out that dear, dear friends of ours who have been battling brain cancer for the better part of three years is back in for emergency surgery because they found something bad on an MRI.  I had plans all week to post and then one thing after another kept building up until I actually broke down in tears at work yesterday.

It just seems that sometimes life can be so unfair.  We work so hard to protect ourselves and our families from things.  We teach our children how to be safe and still monitor everything they do (sometimes on the DL because you can't be the uncool parent to your pre-teen)...but we are there.  This blog started with the hope of bettering my health and wellness along with my families.  We workout, we eat healthy (well healthier then we did) and sometimes its just never enough.

I don't want to be a Debbie downer, especially on a Friday.  It is supposed to be a fabulous TGIF day right?!?!  So when I sat to start writing this I wanted to find some way to be honest with you all and express my feelings but also to try and find a sliver of a silver lining.  I randomly started to look for an image that would maybe hopefully work, and that is when I found the one above.

Life can be unfair sometimes, but that's no reason to give up on it.
Remember, its the tough situation that make you a better person in the end.

Is it strange that this brings me such peace of mind?  It's true.  I have seen it myself.  When I was preggers with my sweet mini, my cousin was diagnosed with lymphoma and stayed so positive through the whole process of finding out, treatment, remission.  It was amazing to me.  He never lost his smile or drive to be healthy.  He did lose his eyebrows :)  He was already bald so he wasn't worried about his hair so much.

Our friend Tonya, who has been battling brain cancer, always seems to have a smile.  her and her wonderful husband, their adorable little girl, they take each update in and find the will to persevere.  I don't know how they do it, but they pray and find support in the love and strength of friends and always find the good in each thing.  Both Tonya and my cousin have CONVINCED me that there is such strength in how you feel mentally.  Being healthy is of course impacted by what you eat and if you exercise, but NEVER forget the importance of positive thinking.

I have seen a lot of sites talking about the importance of self love lately.  My friends Jessica and Cori over at The Journey: Small  Changes Big Picture have a challenge going right now that is just amazing!  Part of that challenge was about appreciating ourselves and loving our selves.  POSITIVE THINKING!  It starts with loving ourselves enough to not only take care of ourselves but to FIGHT for ourselves and that is what my cousin did, that is what Tonya is doing, that is what we ALL need to do!  Keep sharing the love and support.  I find such solace in opening my blog and seeing your comments, or opening my face book page and seeing the kind words that people share and the fact that they are sharing my page with others.  It keeps me moving and motivated....and luckily (so far) I have been blessed with good health.

Feeling a Bit MisInformed

I don't know about you, but I take great issue with BMI calculators.  I always have, even at my skinniest.  It seems to me that they are just too arbitrary.  There is no consideration of musculature or activity.  My hubs, awesome man that he is, is on the end of the BMI charts that he does NOT want to be on...but his arms and legs are like tree trunks of pure muscle. And now, in the past two weeks I have had to more pushes over the BMI line.

I took my sweet mini to the pediatrician for her 4 year check up.  She is perfect.  Smart, funny, healthy, quite brave (she sat through two shots), and according to her BMI overweight.  The look on my face said it all I'm sure as my pediatrician explained how it's not a concern because of how strong she is...she has a lot of muscle (she comes from strong parents after all).  It did help that the doc also said that she hates the BMI stuff and doesn't put stock in it.  If our medical professional disagrees, that is enough for me.

My second push was my own biometric screening.  I am VERY proud to say that I was in the "green zone" on all areas: HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, BMI...but I was darn close to the overweight zone on the BMI (also the glucose...worry!!!!!)

While I struggle with my weight, I know my fight is not the same as others.  Mine is more of a vanity fight...but with health repercussions.  I watched my Dad collapse with a heart attack when I was 15.  I am lucky that he was ok, but I know my genetics and my eating habits and workout habits (or as of late lack of workout habits) is going to bite me in the butt!  I have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer looming out there in my genetic cloud...and I am trying to take action to overcome them all.  I will not be passive in my life.  While I am on the "normal" side I am barely hanging on there so I am taking action.  I am on the downward slope to 40, I have a family history that is not so great, and I have 2 amazing kids that I plan to watch grow old...so I have to take action and this whole BMI thing makes me think I am failing sometimes.

So in the interest of good health I got a Fitbit flex from my parents for my birthday, as I mentioned in my last post.  well it arrived yesterday and I promptly charged it up and have it on now.  Already adjusted the step goal to 12,000 since its been awhile since I tracked my progress and am ready to go.  To top it off, mini asked if we could workout together after reading (yet again) The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food.  I love that she is actively involved in her own health already...our example must be in the right direction!!

What are YOUR thoughts on BMI???

Always Remember

I will always remember and never forget that fateful day, as we all will.  Today I stop and say a prayers of thanks.  To all of the men and women who have fought tirelessly throughout history for our country, for our freedom.  I say a prayer for the people who perished that fateful day.  I say a prayer for their family and friends.  I say a prayer the medics, police, firefighters, first responders, everyone who risked their own lives to save as many as possible.  I say a prayer for a city still healing.  I say a prayer for my children, that they may never live through such a terrifying attack in their own lifetimes.  I say a prayer for the world.

Days like today make me stop and really think.  The number on the scale, the amount of reps or calories.  It's all so small in the grand scheme of things.  Always remember!

Thankful

I feel like I have a lot to say this Monday, but I am actually going to scale it back a bit and let Melanie from The Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance Blog say most of it today.  I had a nice message from Melanie a few weeks ago about the importance of exercise and cancer.  This hits close to home for me as I have been affected by cancer on both sides of my family.  I lost an aunt to lung cancer, a grandmother to colon cancer, and uncle to Hodgkin's Lymphoma and have had an aunt and cousin both beat non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.  When reading through what Melanie had to say, I must admit I thought about my cousin Eric a lot.  When he found a lump under his arm, he knew what the diagnosis was going to be...his mom had been through it.  So when it was time to see the oncologist his sister (another cousin-Deanna who happens to be a nurse), met him and his wife at the appointment.  She came with a bright yellow binder full of research she had done, treatments, etc. and it was organized already for him.  He called it his happy cancer file.  It was a joke, but it worked.  Eric remained positive ands active throughout his treatment, and today is cancer free.

Here is what Melanie has to share:

Limitations That May Affect Your Cancer Exercise Regimen

Exercise is an important part of any cancer recovery program. There are some precautions that people with certain conditions must take while exercising. Common groups that deserve special attention include patients with anemia and patients who were sedentary prior to cancer. Here are a few exercise tips for people who are in special groups:

Exercise Tips for People Who Were Previously Sedentary
People who were sedentary before their diagnosis may have complications when they begin an exercise program. These people should begin their exercise program slowly and gradually increase the time they exercise. Walking is a great way to begin treatment. Start out light and increase the amount weekly, as you feel more energetic. When exercising, cancer patients should pay attention to signs of overexertion.

Exercise Tips for People With Anemia

Exercise can be helpful for cancer patients with anemia but only in moderation. More than likely, cancer patients who exercise every day with anemia will have syncope or fainting episodes. Red blood cells are not produced at optimal levels in anemic patients. This can decrease the amount of oxygen circulating in the body, which may result in the syncope or fainting episodes. People with anemia should be aware of how their bodies feel and should cease exercise if they show signs of over-exertion.

Anemia can inhibit the exercise program of people with cancer. Cancer patients who follow a strict vegetarian diet with vegetables, fruits, and vegetable-based proteins, such as beans, may help to keep their cancer from spreading, but some people do not feel energetic if they are not getting enough iron.

Remember to have enough iron in your system from a source that is easily absorbed into the blood stream. Some fruits and vegetables have high levels of iron but do not allow iron to absorb into the system. This can also affect exercise. People with irritable bowel syndrome who eat foods that they should not eat may prevent absorption of iron into their systems. Speak with your physician about potential problems that may affect your fitness programs.

People With Limitations Can Still Exercise
People with physical limitations such as those with mesothelioma, can still exercise and reap the benefits of exercise. Studies have shown that people who exercise before and after surgery will improve their prognosis and recovery. Many patients feel better and more energized after exercising. Fatigue in cancer patients may cause sleep disturbances and emotional distress. When cancer patients exercise, they often can reduce the medications prescribed and the fatigue experienced. Talk to your doctor and start exercising today!

Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

TV, Movies and Me

1. If you could be a recurring star on a show that is currently on TV, which show would you choose?  Maybe Bones or Criminal Minds.  I haven’t’ watched a new episode of CM in a while because it got a little too scary for a bit there, but I love that they make you think.  Or Pretty Little Liars just because it is my guilty pleasure.

2. Name the movie that you are most embarrassed to admit that you love.  Not really embarrassed by any.  Steel Magnolias is one that I reflexively recite…and I always watch An Affair to Remember when I can.

3. Name one show that you've never seen and would love to watch.  Going with Kenlie;’s response I will chose an actually Broadway show and say I would LOVE to see Wicked.

4. Do you ever go to movies alone?  I have only done it once, and that was to see The Sweetest Thing.  I was just bored and there was no one around to go with me.  I would do it again though.

5. If you could only watch one TV show for the next year, which show would you choose and why?  Friends.  I love it.  It has a special place in my heart from high school, and let’s be honest.  I watch it every night on Nick at Nite.  J

6. If you could star in one reality show, which one would it be and why?  Other than cooking shows, I’m not really a reality TV fan, so I think I’d pass.

7. If someone rented a billboard for you, what would it say?  Supermom!

8. Who is the most famous person with whom you have been in the same room?  This is tricky as I have worked with some cool/famous people in my former career in theatre/concert management.  Brian Wilson was SUPER cool, and I walked to lunch with Rue McClanahan once.

9. If you were chosen to be a contestant on a TV game show, which show would you want to be on?  Jeopardy, I love it.

10. If there was a movie being made about you, which actor would you choose to play you? Hmmm, maybe Sandra Bullock.  I love her.
Now it's your turn to answer this week's questions!  Don't forget to come back and link up in the comments!  Happy Monday, lovely humans!

Instantly...like NOW!!

So, as anyone who has ever struggled knows...taking off weight and toning is a process.  I have come to a not-so-happy understanding with this.  What I mean is, I know its the reality....but still think it sucks.  I have found only one other process that is as mind numbingly painful to wait through...growing out my hair.  Who's with me.
I go through my phases, as I'm sure many of you do, where I want it short then I want it long, then reverse ad nauseum.  I finally broke down last year and cut it short...like Ginnifer Goodwin short.
this was the inspiration for my most recent cut

Don't get me wrong, I get a fair amount of compliments on my short and sassy do, and most days i LOVE it...but then there are those days when I find myself googling how to make it grow faster.  Today is one of those days.  I want to have the long, sleek hair the trainer in my workout video has...the hair that makes other girls jealous with its long, glossy beauty.  I want Zoey's hair.
love this hair!

So you can see my dilemma.  There is a vast difference in these two do's.  Both are fab in my opinion...but that's a lot of time and "grow out" to achieve.  That has always been my problem...I hate the growing out phase and get frustrated and cut.  I wish there was a magic potion I could take that would just make it grow.  I guess I have to rely on my healthy diet...which doesn't make it happen NOW!!  I have all sorts of cute up do's in my head NOW.  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

35 hmmmm

According to Wikipedia, the number 35 is important for the following reasons:
  • 35 is the sum of the first five triangular numbers, making it a tetrahedral number.
  • 35 is the number of ways that three things can be selected from a set of seven unique things also known as the "combination of seven things taken three at a time".
  • 35 is a centered cube number, a pentagonal number and a pentatope number.
  • 35 is a highly cototient number, since there are more solutions to the equation x - φ(x) = 35 than there are for any other integers below it except 1.
  • There are 35 free hexominoes, the polyominoes made from six squares.
  • Since the greatest prime factor of 352 + 1 = 1226 is 613, which is obviously more than 35 twice, 35 is a Størmer number.
  • 35 is a discrete semiprime (or biprime) (5 × 7); the tenth, and the first with 5 as the lowest non-unitary factor. The aliquot sum of 35 is 13 this being the second composite number with such an aliquot sum; the first being the cube 27. 35 is the last member of the first triple cluster of semiprimes 33,34,35. 85,86,87 is the second such triple discrete semiprime cluster.
  • 35 is the highest number one can count to on one's fingers using base 6.
Today it is also an important number because today, I admit openly, today I am now 35!  A few years ago if you asked me about 35 I would wince, cringe even.  I mean, 35...that's middle aged right?!?!  That's the point where you start to get all broken down and eating dinner at 4 pm right?!?!  Well, thanks to motivation, my wonderful family and YOU, my readers, I am proud to be 35 and feel better now than I did at 25...seriously!

I look at how much my life has changed in the past 10 year, 5 years, heck even in the past year and I am so proud of the woman I am becoming.  I actually put my health and well being towards the very top of my list of priorities.  Ten years ago I celebrated with my (now) hubby by hitting the bar with friends and drinking and smoking the night away.  Now, I woke up early to get a jump on the day and plan to celebrate tonight by surprising my family with a new recipe and getting in a workout.  Oh how times they are a changin!

I got to celebrate my birthday eve at the federal courthouse waiting to find out if I was going to have to serve on a jury.  I LITERALLY spent all day there.  I was called at 715 am, they released us for lunch at 1130am (after having only sat in the waiting area for those 4 long hours) then returned to wait for another hour and half before being called up to the actual courtroom.  The good news I guess is that I got to listento my latest book on tape while I waited...Such a Pretty Fat: One Narcissist's Quest to Discover If Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big; Or, Why Pie Is Not the Answer.  I feel like I must have been living under a rock for the past few years having never read (neigh even heard of) Jen Lancaster...and now two books in I'm not sure what I did before her.  Anyways, I digress (seems to be happening a lot).    I was able to be dismissed from service since I am a primary care provider for my kiddos and this case, they are estimating, will take 5 weeks maybe longer.  I am all about doing your civil duty but who can take that kind of time from work and family?!?!  I will take my dismissal gratefully and perhaps send President Obama and VP Biden a thank you card for the early birthday present.  I have to say, having spent all day at the courthouse staring at their pics...Joe Biden has a GREAT smile, don'tcha think?

So happy birthday to me...hopefully I can keep getting healthier and fitter so as to enjoy the 2nd anniversary of 35 years down the road!

Never Forget

Today is a day that I always stop and take stock.  It's a day that I will make sure my children always remember.  It's a day that was very real for my generation.  Before I moved into the world of academia, I worked in professional theatre.  I refer to it as my "former life."  It was something I loved doing, but was not conducive to having a family...at least not in the capacity that I worked, as a Stage Manager.  Imagine my excitement at 23 to be told by my boss "We are doing a new show, one that has only ever been showcased...and for financial reasons we are sending you to NYC to rehearse it for 5 weeks."  OMG!!  I was SO excited.  Hello Big Apple!

I arrived in NYC on Monday, made my way to my kick a$$ apartment the company was putting my assistant and me up in and started to settle in.  Tuesday we got up early, walked through Times Square to work and started setting up the rehearsal space.  AT the time, I was still a smoker and we were outside on a smoke break when a traffic cop told us terrorists had taken over the towers.  What?!?!  This can't be?  Then we heard it.  We staggered across the street and saw the playback on the jumbo-tron of the first plane...then we looked towards the south end of the island.  I will never forget.

I wanted to go home.  I wanted my (then boyfriend) husband to hold me.  I wanted my mom and dad.  I wanted it to be a bad dream.  We were immediately sent "home" and watched the news coverage all day.  What else could we do.  Strange city, no phone service for a few hours, we just sat and watched dumbfounded.  Later that evening, after talking to family and loved ones, we left the apartment to find dinner.  The feeling that was in NYC at that time, in that moment, is the feeling I wish would take hold of this country.  Never have I seen a city...a mass group of strangers pull together the way they did.  It wasn't natives and tourists and visitors...it was Americans.  It was people going out of their way to make others feel safe, feel okay, just feel.  I remember being numb until that point.

Over the next few weeks we attended vigils, saw the devastation, and tried to heal with a city that was left with a permanent scar.  I was left with a permanent scar.  I look back and even as I write this I can feel the tears stinging my eyes.  I can taste the smoke and ash in the air, I can feel the loss...but I have hope that we can move forward.  To draw strength from this horror.  To give respect and honor to all those that were lost, all those that stepped up as true heroes, and continue the fight today.  To never forget.

The Royal Flush

how cute is this...wish I could take credit...may have to do my own for scrapbooking purposes!
I generally try and keep my blog about me and my journey to a healthier life.  It's my "me" time when I sit and type.  I can ponder things, express myself, celebrate my triumphs and try to figure out how to overcome my obstacles.  But today I had to share this great news with you all!  Today marks one week, yes one week...seven days that my princess has been consistently using the potty and wearing her big girl undies!   It has been a long road, but we have made it!
Now, I know that non-parentals generally don't want to hear about every milestone that is accomplished for other peoples kiddos, and if you are that type...feel free to stop here.  I won't be offended.  I was a non-parental at one time too and was not all that impressed by the bodily functions of someone else's child...but for those of you who stick around...what an amazing feeling!  My little bug decided last Friday morning that she wanted to wear her big girl panties all day.  We were going on a play date and her friend is already potty trained (she is about five months older), and we had been slowly building to this.  I had been coming home from work at 3 and putting her in them until bed time and we were doing pretty well, but her asking for the whole day was monumental.
I was a bit wary, we had a a forty minute car ride (each way), but she was so excited and asked to wear them, I couldn't say no.  We packed up our gear and took off.  She was a champ!  There was one small accident outside when she was trying to get in the house to go and couldnt get the door open fast enough, but other than that no accidents!  I was SO proud!  And that was just the beginning.  She has been going on the potty ever since!  There have been a few hiccups (mostly due to timing and trying to get there on time), but for the most part she is doing it!  I have been putting her in her pull ups at night to be safe, but even at night...she is waking up dry in the morning.  Last night was the biggest milestone for me with the whole potty-training...she woke up at midnight because she had to go!  Her little body woke her up with the warning signs and we got up and sat on the potty and tinkled!
To celebrate her achievment she got a new Snow White barbie and another pack of fun undies.  Now she has fairies to go along with her princesses!  My princess has mastered the royal flush!

Inspiration

Well...I was so inspired to start this post and found a wonderful picture to use and sadly can't get the picture to post.  AHHHH!  Okay, stress released...on to the good stuff!  The past week I feel as though I keep getting signs from the universe that make me feel like good things are on the horizon.  Which in turn is inspiring me.  What signs you ask, well aren't you a curious one :)
  • My foot had a serious break-through this week.  I was working on it (just basic bending and stretching) and it cracked.  Not a bad crack, but one of those knuckle cracking type of cracks and all of a sudden I had so much more mobility.  I think the walking everyday is helping.
  • My little one has been doing a great job on the potty!  During the day she and my husband have their routine with the pull ups, because they are out and about all the time.  When Momma gets home though she knows it's big girl time.  We put on our big girl undies and go for it until bed time.  She has been doing GREAT!  I even took her for a quick trip to the grocery store in her big girl panties and she was a champ.  I'm hoping this weekend that we can do a long stretch on either Saturday or Sunday (or maybe even both) in our big girl undies and then (fingers crossed) we will be well on our way to being potty trained.
  • My oldest made the top team in a higher division for soccer (got the official word last night), and was also moved up on her premier team.
  • I have gotten my butt back into the kitchen and am having what I conswider to be great success!  Two nights ago I made low cal stuffed peppers.  I used ground turkey, cilantro, long grain brown rice, salsa, taco seasonings, onion and garlic.  Very yummy and good for us!  I also made ham and cheese crescent rolls for the little one.  Then last night my wee helper and I made two homemade pizzas.  One plain cheese on a traditional dough and one veggies and pepperoni on a wheat crust!  Sadly no pictures..but mostly because it was all so yummy we just ate it all up!
  • I have discovered a way to clear my clutter and make a few bucks at the same time without the headache of a garage sale.  I have finally delved into Craigs list.  I listed seven items, had hits on six already, and one has already sold.  It's nice because I can help stop the impending "Hoarders" casting call that I feel like my house could become with all of the toys and the gadgets and the craziness.  The item I sold was my big ticket item too, which makes it an extra bonus!!
  • Finally, today is my Friday (a day early for those of you who read this post on a non-Thursday).  Granted I worked extra hours Monday-today, but now I get a whole day off for girl stuff since Dadoo has to work.  Tomorrow is BFF day.  A day that has been far too long in trying to set up.  My big girl is away for the week, so my little one and I are off to see our BFF's.  My bestie who I have been friends with since third grade and I both have girls within 5 months of each other (plus she has an older one who is not too much older and still enjoys the lil ones).
With all those good vibes being pushed at me, I have to admit...I feel renewed in my overall goals!  I feel like I need to push myself more with my workouts and my recovery.  I need to try more exotic recipes and foods.  I need my kiddos to see a vibrant and healthy mom who can not only keep up with them, but maybe even pass them on occassion!  Time to get busy!

Under the Knife

Well readers, I am sorry I have been so late in getting back to you.  Last week was crazy busy at work and with Get Fit America week, I was busting my butt getting to the gym and working out everyday.  I have been trying to squeeze in as much exercise as possible before this Friday when I have surgery.  Yep, it's confirmed and booked.  I am going to have a small wedge of bone removed from my foot and a fancy titanium screw put in it's place.  I am not looking forward to this at all.  I have had surgery before.  I am without an appendix and wisdom teeth, and my sweet little lady was a C-section, but I'm nervous about this one.  I guess maybe because I didn't think it would happen so quickly when the option was first brought up.  When I had my appendix it was part of an overall exploratory surgery and it had been months building up to that point so surgery had been an option but was last on the list.  We exhausted everything else, so I knew.  Wisdom teeth...doesn't everyone know that they have to got through that one.  It's the people that DON'T have to have them out that are surprised I think.  And with my c-section, I had a 4 week warning that that would be the case, so I was able to prepare myself mentally.  This is a week.  A week!  Luckily my hubby was already planning to be home so that's taken care of, and I am able to take a lot of work home with me so I don't have to take all that sick time...it's just, geez...surgery!
I am trying to stay positive about it.  I do have a bunch of "non-standing" work out options ready to go.  I am getting the work stuff in order.  I'm more worried about making sure I can keep up with the kiddos.  It will be fine, I'm sure.  It just stinks.
I did enjoy my classes last week!  Spinning is much harder than I thought (especially on your tushy with those seats OUCH).  I also made it to Pilate's and got a great few miles in on the treadmill.  Life happens and sadly I didn't make it to all the classes I had hoped to, but I did workout everyday; so I am both proud and happy with that.
     Now...on to FMM :)

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

FMM: All The Single Ladies (and Gents)

1. What is your current relationship status?  Are you happy with that status?  I am married and quite happy.  I look at my hubby and still get the same butterflies I did when I first met him.
2. Do you find it enjoyable to take care of someone in addition to yourself, or do you prefer to be responsible only for yourself?  I enjoy taking care of someone else.  It’s part of what I love about being a mom too.  It’s nice knowing too that someone is going to take care of me when I need it.
3.  What's the most important physical characteristic in your mate/potential mate?  I have always been prone to eyes and teeth.  Not sure why the teeth, but I always check them out…and eyes, we they ARE the window to the soul aren’t they? J
4. What's the most important (non-physical) characteristic in your mate/potential mate?  This cannot be summed up in 1 trait…if I was narrowing it down to tops though I would have to say honest and loving.
5. Is it important to you that your significant other have the same hobbies and interests as you?  NO!  We have common interests of course and share those, but it is also exciting to share each other’s interests…things we wouldn’t have normally done.  Diverse interests also help us maintain of sense of self.  My hubby doesn’t scrapbook with me, but he buys me little things to support my hobby.
6. If you could go out on a date with a celebrity who would it be?  Honestly, I can’t think of anyone.  In a past life I would have answered George Clooney, but now…I don’t know.  I’m pretty happy with the fella I have.
7. What's your idea of a good first date?  I have always thought a low-key lunch time picnic in the park would have been a great first date.  You re outside enjoying the day and have plenty of opportunity to get to know each other without the all the formality that sometimes comes with a first date.  If the weather was off…a lunch date at a casual restaurant maybe.  The expectations seem less with lunch to me.
8. Are there any traits/habits that you'd consider a deal breaker?  Abusive in any way, shape or form.  You can tell a lot about someone by how they talk about others.
9. Okay ladies...Facial Hair: Yes, or No?  I’d have to say yes…I’m trying to think now if I have ever seen my hubby EVER without some form of facial hair.
10.  Would you marry someone who is opposed to diamond engagement rings?  Never!  My engagement ring is a mix of diamonds and sapphires (my birth stone).  I love that he tied some traditional in with someone that is important to me.
11. What do you wish you could do differently in your next relationship?  I do not plan on having any other relationships (at least no other romantic ones).
12. Is there anyone from your past that you'd like to date again now? No, I am happy with where life has brought me.  Also, I think people come in and out of your life for a reason, so they aren’t there any more for a reason.
13. Describe your worst first date story ever.  Well, I have known the guys I’ve dated generally before dating them so there wasn’t really an opportunity for a WORST story.  I did however go out with this one guy in college…we got along really well and I didn’t want to screw that up but he kept asking so I finally said ok.  Half way through the date he leaned in to kiss me and we both burst out laughing-we knew that moving to the date level wasn’t right at that point.  J
14. Describe the perfect date with your significant other.   I don’t think I believe in a PERFECT date.  Any time we are together is good.  I’m actually happiest though when it is the 2 of us with our 2 girls just laughing and having fun as a family.  That is perfect!
15.  Would you date someone shorter than you? At 5’2”, it’s never even come up.
16. Share one (or a few) bonus traits that would be fun to find in a significant other (even if they aren't as important as other traits.)  Good question, I’ll have to think about this one…
17. What's one thing you'd like to do with a significant other that you've never done with another?  Train and exercise…in the past this was a pretty solitary thing, it’s nice to share it with someone.
18.  PDA: Yes, or No?  As long as it’s PG it’s ok…I use my 10 year old as a base line.  If she would be embarrassed, it’s not ok.
19. Do you kiss on the first date? I did with my hubs
20. Who, if anyone, makes your heart flutter?  My husband does.  My children do too, but in a different way.

Moving Forward

I found this on the Internet and thought...this is a MUST for my blog!  It's so perfect!  You can't wait!  You must make things happen!  This is a HUGE part of what I want my blog to impart on people.  I have waited and passed up opportunities out of fear.  No more I tell you!  I have taken control of my life.  I admit, there have been some set backs (possible foot surgery, I will hopefully know more today), but in the past something like that would have derailed me.  I would have given up on trying to run that 5K, or said, well, There goes my workout regime.  Not this time, not this girl! I have a plan in place, and have already started working to make it happen.
As I mentioned in my last blog, I have signed up for a bunch of free classes this week as part of Get Fit America week.  Sadly, I missed the muscle conditioning class yesterday because I had two sick kiddos, but I took advantage of nap time and got in a good Pilate's workout.  Today I am going to try my first ever spinning class.  I am actually really excited.  A few of my friends have done spinning and swear by it...we will see.  I know it will be a challenge, but I am ready for it!  Forty-five minutes of sweat inducing cycling...sounds like just the right cure for the rainy day blues.  I am also excited about the Pilate's mat class tomorrow.  I am hoping to get some good workout ideas from the mat class for in case I do have to have surgery.
That leads me to my plan.  I have been searching the library DVD collection and ordering things for the girls and myself.  The yoga DVD I bought has been such a huge hit (with both the 2 year old and the 10 year old) that I needed more for them.  I also wanted to start a small collection of workouts that would not require me being on my feet so that I can stay active in case I have this surgery.  I think that mat work will be my BFF for a while if that is the case.  Even as I type this out, I am still shocked at the person I have become.  I really want to stay on this healthier path.  I love that my whole family has made exercise a priority...even the toddler.  She absolutely loves doing her yoga, and when her big sis wanted to join in yesterday, it was like a party.  A happy, healthy, yoga party!
If, by some stroke of good luck I don't have to have this foot surgery, I have already found a 5K to run the beginning of June.  SO see, I have all bases covered.  I will let you know what the doc says.
